How to Get My Child Tested for Autism

At On Target ABA, our testing process is efficient, professional, and focused on delivering reliable answers as quickly as possible.

Getting Started

  1. Fill out a quick intake form

Reach out to our team, and we will confirm your insurance. We will also ask a few screening questions about your child’s behavior, such as whether they exhibit repetitive movements, sensory sensitivities, or communication difficulties.

Getting to Know Your Child

  1. Let us handle insurance

For the first part of our autism test for children, your child visits our clinic for a pre-screening. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will observe their behavior and fill out a questionnaire with you. If the questionnaire results reach a certain threshold, a full virtual autism evaluation with one of our clinical psychologists may be recommended.

Taking a Closer Look

  1. Get an assessment + personalized plan

In part two of the evaluation, your child will have a virtual evaluation with one of our licensed clinical psychologists for the full autism test. This typically takes about 1.5 – 2 hours.

Reviewing the Results

  1. Get an assessment + personalized plan

You will receive a straightforward, easy-to-understand diagnosis report on your child. No vague language or confusing clinical jargon.

Planning Next Steps

  1. Start ABA therapy within weeks

If your child is diagnosed with autism, we will support you and walk you through what comes next, including whether ABA therapy may be helpful and how to get started.

Why Should I Get My Child Tested for Autism?

Most parents come to us questioning if they are overreacting or if something is actually going on. If you have noticed certain differences in your child’s behavior or development, we believe the right thing to do is to come in for an autism screening.

Common signs parents might notice that indicate autism testing is recommended:

  • Limited eye contact
  • Difficulty communicating
  • Repetitive body movements or behaviors
  • Strong reactions to sounds or textures

“They might grow out of it”.

Yes, children develop at different rates, but waiting can delay access to helpful support. You are not overreacting. Getting answers is not labeling your child; it’s understanding them.

What Happens After Autism Testing

Next step: Clarity

We do more than hand you a report; we help you understand what it means and what to do next.

Autism tests for kids are done with real-world support in mind, helping you answer:

  • Does my child meet the criteria for autism?
  • What support does my child need?
  • Is ABA therapy appropriate and helpful?
  • What guidance is available to help my child thrive both at home and at school?

If therapy is the next step, we will help you transition to the care of our supportive ABA therapy team.

Questions You May Have About Autism Testing for Kids

Children can be evaluated for autism as early as 18 months old. If you have concerns, it’s never too early to reach out.

Not every child needs ABA therapy after autism testing. The purpose of the test is to determine whether your child has autism or other developmental challenges, and if autism is confirmed, to what degree. Depending on the test results, ABA therapy may then be recommended.

An autism diagnosis for kids consists of an initial developmental screening, behavioral observations, parent interviews, and communication assessments. Testing may include standardized tools such as the ADOS-2 and usually takes place during a 1-2 hour virtual appointment.

Licensed psychologists, developmental pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, psychiatrists, and qualified medical doctors can diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Schools can identify educational needs, but cannot provide a medical diagnosis of autism.
